What we witnessed on Saturday, the day after the inauguration, was historic and unprecedented. When we watched the various media report on the events, however, we were struck by the horrendous lack of understanding on what really occurred.
Most of the pundits were arguing that what were the women really wanting or it was all about women’s rights, reproductive rights, and equal pay. Nothing could be further from the truth. First, there were demonstrations in 75 cities and 15 countries, with nearly 40 million people participating! This was not just about women’s rights.
This was about reacting to a long history of oligarchic rule. It was about economic stagnation. It was about unending divisiveness. It was about poor education. It was about obscene income inequality, lack of a living wage, and the reality that our children have less, not more opportunity than their previous generation. It was about endless wars and the gross displacement of millions of refugees. It was about hunger and the lack of access to clean water and decent affordable health care. This was the beginnings of a global rebellion to oligarchic rule.
For most of our history until about the early 90’s we all lived in a patriarchal society. Then with events like the US Supreme Court ruling of Citizens United and the banking crisis of 2008, we were confronted with the “in your face” striping of our wealth by greedy bankers. They forced a reality where we all, not just Americans, were striped of our wealth to cover their gambling debts.
What we really witnessed on Saturday was the birth of and the emergence of a matriarchal society on a global basis. Women have had enough and as any married man on the planet knows if you ignore your spouse and she becomes angry, Hell has no fury like the wrath of a woman.
For us who are awake, we salute the women of the world and say “it is about time!”
